The Cooking System — Fire First, and What the Stove Is Actually For

Introduction

The cooking plan has settled into a shape that changes what the stove needs to be: the campfire is the primary cooking source, and the stove exists to boil water — tea, ramen, coffee — and to cook when a fire is not an option.

That is a much lighter duty than the equipment currently budgeted for it. A Camp Chef Everest 2X is a two-burner, 40,000 BTU stove weighing 15 lb. It is an excellent stove and it is enormously over-specified for boiling a litre of water beside a fire that is already doing the cooking.

But the weight is not what decides this, and the obvious answer is not the right one. The question that settles the stove is a different one entirely.

1.1 The question that actually decides it

Michigan issues burn restrictions, and they land in exactly the dry stretches of summer when the trips are most likely. On a fire-ban day the stove stops being a kettle and becomes the entire kitchen — and a stove chosen on the assumption that a fire will do the real work is a stove chosen for the days it is least needed.

Answer that one honestly and the stove specification falls out of it. Everything else in this volume is arithmetic.

1.2 The mismatch nobody notices until they are hungry

A bottletop single burner concentrates its heat into a circle a few inches across. A 12-inch cast iron pan is a large, thermally massive object that conducts heat sideways slowly and unevenly — which is exactly why it is superb over a fire, where heat arrives across the whole underside, and poor on a small burner, where the middle scorches while the edges stay cool.

And the physical problem is worse than the thermal one. A 12-inch cast iron skillet weighs about eight pounds empty. Putting it on a stove that balances on a 1 lb propane canister is not a cooking setup, it is an accident being scheduled.

So the pan and the stove are one system, not two purchases. Downsizing the stove while keeping the 12-inch cast iron produces a kit that works beautifully over a fire and barely at all without one — which is precisely the fire-ban case.

1.3 The fuel question, and Michigan settles it

🔴 A canister-top isobutane stove — the Jetboil and PocketRocket class — is the lightest and most fuel-efficient way to boil water, and it is the wrong answer here. It fails when it is coldest, which in Michigan is when hot water matters most, and it introduces a second fuel type into a vehicle already carrying 1 lb propane canisters.

A bottletop propane burner runs on the canisters already aboard. One fuel, one spare, nothing to forget. It works at any temperature the trip will see. And it weighs one to two pounds against the Everest’s fifteen.

Its weakness is stability — a pot of boiling water perched on a 1 lb canister is genuinely tippy. A stabiliser base, or a remote hose that puts the canister on the ground, fixes it for a few ounces, and either is worth having before the first use rather than after the first spill.

The saving is real — about 13 lb, on a plan that is over — and it is available only if the fire-ban answer is something other than “cook in the cast iron.”

1.5 The recommendation, stated as a decision rather than a purchase

If a burn ban means switching to one-pot meals — ramen, boiled dinners, anything that does not need a 12-inch pan — then a single-burner bottletop propane stove is clearly right. Same fuel, cold-capable, 13 lb lighter, and entirely sufficient for the duty described.

🔴 If a burn ban means still cooking in the cast iron, the two-burner stays, because nothing lighter will drive that pan properly and safely. The 15 lb is then the price of the pan, not the price of the stove — and it should be recorded that way, because that is where the weight actually comes from.

A third path worth considering before buying anything: keep the two-burner for trips where the trailer is going, and carry only the single burner on deep trips. The trailer has spare capacity and the truck does not. The stove does not have to be one decision for both configurations — very little else on this rig is.

1.6 What is still open

The single-burner model is not chosen, deliberately — the fire-ban question comes first, and it changes which class of stove is even a candidate.

🔴 And a larger question sits behind this one: there is no cold-storage plan. The fridge left the build and nothing replaced it. If food storage on a deep trip turns out to be a cooler and ice, that is 35 to 50 lb — more than three stoves — and it would reshape the food plan far more than the burner does. Settle that before optimising the stove.
