The Trailer as Built — and the Capacity It Actually Buys
Introduction
🔴 SUPERSEDED IN PART, 2026-08-30 — three of this volume’s load-plan items are out of the build. The fridge is removed, the Anker SOLIX F3000 is removed (its removal is no longer a lever, it simply is not aboard), and the 200 Ah house battery was never built — an EcoFlow River 3 Max Plus, 858 Wh, 24 lb replaced it. ⚠ The trailer’s mission has also been settled: kayak outings to rivers and state parks. It does not go on the deep two-track trips, which are the majority. 🔴 And the tongue-weight picture has inverted: with the fridge, the battery and most of the water gone from ahead of the axle, tongue now sits at about 6.4 percent — far BELOW the 10 percent sway floor, where this volume worried about it being too high. → Weight and Balance vol 3 carries the live numbers, generated from the loadout calculator.
The trailer exists. It is a Haul-Master 5 ft × 10 ft custom modular utility trailer (Harbor Freight SKU 59846), assembled from the kit by the owner, decked in ten 1×6 boards, and fitted with a rail system built from 80/20 1530 extrusion — 15 series, 1.5 in × 3 in T-slotted aluminium. The rails carry two Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120 kayaks with two Lectric XPeak 2.0 Step-Thru Extended Range e-bikes stowed underneath them, and a large open area at the front holds a Plano 108-quart wheeled storage trunk and the fridge.
The finding: the trailer is the reason this build closes, and it is nowhere near its own limit. It carries roughly 1,330 lb against a 2,000 lb load rating — a little under half — while the truck it is attached to has essentially no spare capacity at all. ⭐ That asymmetry is the single most useful fact in the whole project, because it means every remaining weight decision has an obvious right answer: put it on the trailer.
One thing complicates that, and it is the subject of the second half of this volume: the tongue is still part of the truck.

The truck’s side of the interface: the PRO-4X Crew Cab 4x4 is rated to tow 6,680 lb, so the trailer is a small fraction of what the truck can pull. ⚠ Towing capacity is not the constraint here and it is worth saying so explicitly, because it is the number people reach for. The constraint is tongue weight against payload, which is a completely different limit and a much smaller one.

✅ The 80/20 figure is now computed rather than guessed. The owner used about 40 feet of 1530, and standard 1530 weighs 2.42 lb per foot (the 1530-LITE profile is 2.01 lb/ft) — so 96.8 lb of aluminium, plus roughly 20 percent for brackets, fasteners and end caps, gives about 116 lb.
⭐ The rail is centred over the wheels and runs five feet front to back, which has two consequences that matter more than its weight. It puts the heaviest items on the deck almost directly over the axle, and it creates a tongue-weight trim control — the subject of the next volume.
⭐ The headline from this table: the trailer has roughly 1,206 lb of unused capacity. The truck’s margin is measured in tens of pounds. Any item that can live on either one belongs on the trailer, and it is not a close call — ⭐⭐ which is exactly the reasoning the owner’s always-a-trailer bins policy later made into a rule.
1.3 The tongue is still on the truck
This is the part that constrains everything, and it is the reason the trailer does not simply solve the problem outright.
A trailer does not carry all of its own weight. The axle carries most of it; the rest presses down on the hitch ball as tongue weight, and that load sits on the truck — counted against the truck’s payload exactly like a passenger or a toolbox. Moving 300 lb of gear from the bed to the trailer does not remove 300 lb from the truck’s sticker. It removes 300 lb and then hands back 10 to 15 percent of the trailer’s entire loaded weight, tare included.
🔴 REPLACED 2026-09-01. The tables that stood here were computed against the brochure’s 1,220 lb payload while their headings read 1,100 — so a 1,190 lb truck total was marked ”✅ under by 30” when it is 90 lb over the label. They also describe a trailer carrying a fridge, a house battery and eight gallons of water. Both are gone rather than annotated.
The trailer now grosses 1,194.1 lb and the truck carries 974 lb before the tongue:

🔴 The tongue is now too LIGHT, not too heavy — 8.50 percent against a 10 percent sway floor. ⭐⭐ But the truck CAN now afford the tongue the trailer needs: since the always-a-trailer policy took truck items to 974 lb, the ceiling is 126.0 lb against a floor of 119.4 — a real window, 6.6 lb wide. → Trailer Build vol 3.
🔴 Two conclusions, and both are firm:
✅ The Anker had to come out of the truck, and it did. It was the difference between over and under, and no version of this load plan closed with 91 lb of home-backup power station riding in the bed. It is out of the build entirely.
⭐⭐ And the usable tongue band is narrow: 10.00 to 10.55 percent — 119.4 to 126.0 lb. Below it the trailer sways; above it the truck is over its label. 🔴 The rig currently sits below the band at 8.50 percent, and the fix is to move load forward on the trailer — never to trim tongue weight. → Trailer Build vol 3.
1.4 Which makes the front storage area the thing to watch
Here is the tension, and it is genuinely counter-intuitive.
Tongue weight comes from load placed ahead of the trailer’s axle. The large open area at the front of the deck — where the Plano trunk and the fridge are going — is the part of the trailer furthest forward, and therefore the part with the most leverage over tongue weight. Loading it heavily is the most direct way to push tongue weight toward 15 percent, which is exactly the column that puts the truck back over its limit.
⚠ So the consumables in that front trunk are, in payload terms, partly still riding on the truck. Not all of them — but a meaningful fraction, and the further forward they sit, the larger that fraction.
🔴 This is not an argument for minimising tongue weight. Too little tongue weight is dangerous in a way that overload is not: a trailer with insufficient tongue load sways, and sway at highway speed builds on itself and is a well-known cause of loss of control. Below about 10 percent is genuinely hazardous. The goal is not “as light as possible” — it is to land deliberately in the 10 to 12 percent band and know the number, rather than to discover it.
Practically, that means:
- The heaviest consumables — water above all — belong over or slightly ahead of the axle, not at the front of the deck. Water is 8.34 lb per gallon and is the densest thing loaded; it is the most effective single item to reposition.
- The Plano trunk is on wheels, which makes its position adjustable rather than fixed. That is an advantage worth using deliberately.
- Lighter, bulky camp kit can live at the front where its leverage costs little.
- The owner reports the trailer is well balanced with the kayaks and e-bikes aboard. ⚠ That balance was established before the trunk and fridge were added, and both are heavy and both go at the front. The balance must be re-checked after they are loaded, not assumed to survive.
1.5 Measuring tongue weight, which is easier than it sounds
Tongue weight is the one number in this dive that is currently a percentage rather than a measurement, and it does not need to stay that way.
The straightforward method is a dedicated tongue-weight scale placed under the coupler with the trailer level and loaded exactly as it will be towed. Failing that, a bathroom scale with a lever arrangement gives a usable figure, and the trailer can also be weighed at a certified scale — tow it across, then uncouple and weigh the truck alone; the difference across the axles gives the tongue load.
🔴 Whichever method, the trailer must be level and loaded as towed, because tongue weight changes with both. A measurement taken with the tongue jacked high, or with the water cans empty, is not the number that matters.
⭐ Getting this figure is now one of the two remaining measurements the whole build waits on — the other being the truck’s certified scale ticket. Together they replace every estimate in this volume.
1.6 What this volume settles
The trailer is the capacity fix, it works, and it is running at less than half its rated load. The build closes — but only just, and only with two things true at once: the Anker F3000 out of the truck, and tongue weight held to 10 to 12 percent rather than allowed to drift to 15.
The margin at 12 percent is four pounds. That is not a margin; it is a coincidence. ⚠ Several figures above are still estimates — the 80/20 rail weight, the fridge, the camp kit, and on the truck side the rack and the tent — and they carry enough combined uncertainty to move the answer by tens of pounds in either direction. The certified scale ticket and the tongue-weight measurement are what turn this from a plausible plan into a known one, and neither is expensive or difficult.
