Why the Suspension Stays Stock, and What Changing It Would Actually Cost
Introduction
The truck is on its factory suspension: Bilstein off-road performance shocks, standard PRO-4X equipment, along with the electronic locking rear differential and the all-terrain tyres. Everything is stock, and this volume argues that it should stay that way for now — not out of caution, but because every input a suspension decision needs is currently missing.
The finding: a lift or a spring change is the one modification on this truck that cannot be undone by unbolting it. It changes the ride height, which changes the aim of the forward radar, which is the same sensor the bull bar volumes have already shown this truck’s driver-assistance systems depend on. Suspension and ADAS are coupled on a 2026 truck in a way they were not on a 2010 one, and almost nobody expects it.
4.1 The instinct, and why it is the wrong order
The sequence that is about to present itself is familiar. The rack goes on, the tent goes on, the DECKED system and the fridge and the battery bank go in, and the truck sits down at the back. The rear arch gap closes up, the headlights point at the treetops, and the obvious conclusion is that the truck needs stiffer springs or a lift.
🔴 That conclusion is wrong in a specific and important way: a spring does not add capacity.
A vehicle’s payload and axle ratings are set by the axles, brakes, frame, wheel bearings and tyres — the components that carry and stop the load. Ride height is a consequence of the spring rate, not a measure of what the truck may carry. Fitting a stiffer spring raises a sagging truck back to level and changes nothing whatsoever about its GVWR or its axle ratings.
⭐ What it does change is the owner’s ability to notice the problem. Sag is the most useful overload symptom the truck has — a free, visible, daily indication that the load is getting heavy. A stiffer spring removes the symptom while leaving the overload in place, and the previous volume established that this build is very likely already over its 1,100 lb payload figure. Fitting springs to a truck in that state converts a visible problem into an invisible one.
That is why suspension comes last in the sequence this project has been following: payload sticker, then scale ticket, then tyre load rating, and only then springs and shocks.
4.2 What a lift actually costs on this specific truck
Suppose the measurements come back and a change is genuinely warranted. It is worth knowing in advance what a lift takes with it, because several of the costs are specific to a 2026 vehicle and are not what the forums discuss.
It raises the centre of gravity on a truck that is already raising it. This build puts a rooftop tent, a rack and an awning at roughly eight feet — approximately 280 pounds carried higher than anything else on the vehicle. A lift adds its height to all of it. On forest two-tracks with off-camber sections, that is the wrong direction, and it is a real handling cost rather than a theoretical one.
It changes driveline angles. On a 4x4 with a front differential and CV axles, lifting alters operating angles at the front half-shafts and the propeller shaft. Beyond modest heights this shortens component life and introduces vibration, and the fix is more parts.
It changes headlight aim, which must be reset. On a truck driven at dawn in deer country, this is not cosmetic.
🔴 And it re-aims the forward radar. This is the coupling that matters and it is easy to miss. The radar’s usefulness depends on where it points in elevation; a vehicle that sits nose-up or nose-down relative to its factory rake is pointing that beam somewhere other than where it was calibrated to point. Radar relocation vendors on this platform say so explicitly — that recalibration may be required based on lift height and rake, by a technician with the correct equipment.
⭐ So the honest cost of a lift on this truck includes an ADAS calibration, and the failure mode if it is skipped is the same silent one from the first volume: the collision-warning and cruise systems keep reporting normally while their effective range and accuracy quietly degrade. A suspension change is an ADAS event on a 2026 vehicle, and it should be budgeted as one.
4.3 What to do instead, in order
Take the measurements. All of them. The door-jamb payload sticker, then a certified scale ticket with front and rear axle weights, truck loaded exactly as it will be driven. Those two numbers turn every question in this dive from an argument into arithmetic.
Then fix the load, not the truck. If the scale says the build is over, the answer is not a spring — it is less weight, or the trailer. The Bed Rack dive already identified the trailer as the capacity fix; the 1,100 lb payload figure from the previous volume makes that case considerably stronger.
Then check the tyres. The Tires and Wheels dive works this out in full: the factory 265/70R17 was rated for the truck as delivered, not as built, and load rating comes before tread pattern and before any suspension change. A spring that stops the truck sagging does nothing for a tyre that is at its load limit.
Only then consider the suspension, and consider it against the measured load. At that point the question is narrow and answerable:
- If the truck sits level and the axle weights are within rating, nothing is needed. The Bilsteins are a good shock and were chosen by people who tested this truck.
- If the rear sags under a load that is within rating, the fix is a rear spring or air helper spring matched to the measured load — a levelling problem, not a capacity problem. ⚠ Air helper springs level the truck; they do not raise its ratings either. The same caution applies.
- If the axle weights are over rating, no suspension part fixes it. That is a load problem and it has a load answer.
⚠ A lift kit chosen for a guess is chosen wrongly, and it is the most expensive way to discover the truck needed something else.
4.4 The one thing worth doing now
Record the truck’s stock ride height before anything else goes on it, while it is still unmodified and unloaded.
Measure from the ground to a fixed reference — the centre of the wheel arch is the usual one — at all four corners, on level ground, and write the four numbers down with the date. It takes five minutes.
⭐ That record is what makes every later measurement meaningful. Once the rack, tent, drawers and battery bank are aboard, the same four measurements say exactly how much the truck has settled, front and rear, and that is a far better guide to what the suspension is actually doing than any impression from the driver’s seat. It is also the number that says whether a levelling spring is needed at all, and how much of one.
Take it this week, before Friday’s running boards and before the rack arrives. Like the bare-rack and stop/start-connector photographs, it is a measurement that becomes impossible to take retrospectively.
4.5 What this volume settles
Nothing changes on the suspension until the truck is weighed. The stock Bilstein package is competent, a spring cannot add capacity, and sag is a useful warning that a stiffer spring would silence on a build that is probably already over payload.
When a change is eventually made, it is an ADAS event as well as a mechanical one — the forward radar is aimed relative to the truck’s rake, and a lift that skips recalibration degrades the collision-warning system silently.
The stock ride height should be recorded this week, because it is the reference every future measurement depends on and it expires the moment the first heavy part goes on.
