Off-the-Shelf Gravity Systems — How They Work, and Which One

Introduction

The previous volume specified a system from parts. This one covers the complete kits, because for most people they are the right answer and building from parts only pays if a specific requirement demands it.

THE FINDING: not one mainstream gravity system is freeze-tolerant — every one of them uses a hollow-fibre membrane, and every one is destroyed by a single hard night in the truck bed. That is not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to know it, because the failure is silent and the protocol that prevents it costs nothing.

The second finding is that the filter is not the part that fails. The bag is.

6.1 How a gravity filter actually works

The entire driving force is the weight of the water in the hanging bag. Nothing else — no pump, no squeeze, no battery.

That is a remarkably small pressure, and understanding it explains everything else about how these systems behave. A squeeze filter you pressurise by hand runs at ten to twenty psi — an order of magnitude more. A gravity system compensates with time and membrane area rather than force.

Three consequences follow directly:

Hanging height matters more than people expect. Going from a tailgate to a branch at shoulder height roughly doubles the pressure, and the flow with it. ⭐ It is the only free performance improvement available.

Fouling hurts disproportionately. With only 1.7 psi pushing, a partially blocked membrane slows dramatically where a squeeze filter would simply need a harder squeeze. This is why backflush discipline matters more on a gravity system than on any other type.

And air stops it completely. At this pressure an air bubble trapped at a high point in the clean line will not be pushed through. ⚠ The system has no authority to clear itself — you have to purge it.

Inside the cartridge are thousands of hollow fibres, each a straw with a porous wall around 0.1–0.2 micron. Water passes through the wall; bacteria, protozoa and sediment stay outside. ⭐ Debris collects on the OUTSIDE of the fibres, which is precisely why backflushing works — reverse flow lifts it off rather than driving it deeper.

Two architectures are sold. A closed system runs dirty bag → filter → clean bag, and the clean bag is a sealed vessel you can hang or carry. An open system runs dirty bag → filter → whatever you put underneath. ⭐ For this build the open arrangement is better, because the clean side is a water-spec Rotopax or a marked bucket, not another bag to fail.

6.2 The systems

6.2.1 What each one is actually for

LifeStraw Peak Series — the newest of the group and the one that reads best on paper. 2,000 litres of cartridge life, the longest here, at the lowest price, and independent testing put its treatment time fastest of the gravity filters at roughly 30–34 seconds a litre. The 8 L version is $80 and the 3 L is $60. ⭐ Two-thirds of the price for a third more cartridge life than the Platypus.

Platypus GravityWorks 4L — the long-standing benchmark and still the tidiest closed dirty/clean system, with an inline shutoff and a genuinely good hose set. 1.75 L/min, 1,500 L cartridge, $135. ⚠ It is the most expensive per litre of filtered water by a wide margin, and its bags have a documented durability history (below).

MSR AutoFlow XL10 litres, the largest reservoir here, built for base camps and groups rather than backpacks. Same 1.75 L/min and 1,500 L cartridge as the Platypus, at $125. ⭐ If the goal is filling a 5-gallon container in as few trips to the water as possible, this is the one that does it in two.

Katadyn BeFree Gravity — the outlier, and interesting for one reason: 🔴 it does not need backflushing. The membrane clears with a vigorous shake. At 6.8 oz it is also by far the lightest. ⚠ But it is only 3 litres and its cartridge life is the shortest of the group, which makes it the wrong shape for filtering everything.

6.3 Cost per litre of filtered water

Since this build filters everything, cartridge life is the number that matters, and the ranking is not the one the prices suggest.

The LifeStraw systems are two to three times better value on the only axis that matters here, and they are the cheapest to buy.

6.4 🔴 The bag is the weak point, not the filter

This is the finding that should govern the purchase, and it is barely mentioned in the marketing.

Cartridges are rated in thousands of litres and generally reach it. The reservoirs do not. Documented failure modes across the category, and Platypus specifically:

  • Pinholes present out of the box, and seams described as too narrow and too close to the edge
  • A pinhole at the junction where the hard collar meets the soft bag body — the single most common failure point
  • Yellowing and delamination developing over roughly a year of use
  • Long-term users reporting that current bags are markedly worse than the older ones, which were described as “indestructible”

So the durable question is not “which cartridge lasts longest” but “what happens when the bag splits, and how much does that cost?”

That reframes the choice. A cheaper system whose bag is a $25 consumable is a better proposition than an expensive one whose replacement reservoir costs half the kit — and ⭐ it is also the strongest argument for the parts-built system in the previous volume, where the reservoir is a commodity dry bag or a hydration bladder that can be replaced with anything.

6.5 🔴 None of them survive freezing

Every system in the table uses a hollow-fibre membrane, and every one is destroyed by freezing. Katadyn state it plainly for the BeFree: like all hollow-fibre filters it can freeze, which breaks it, and there is no way to tell whether a filter has been compromised.

The failure is silent. A cracked filter still passes water at a normal rate and looks completely normal.

Only two compact hollow-fibre filters are engineered to survive it — the Platypus QuickDraw and the MSR Guardian — and neither is sold as a gravity kit. ⭐ That is the specific reason the previous volume built a system around a QuickDraw rather than buying one of these.

If an off-the-shelf kit is bought instead, the protocol is the whole mitigation:

  • A used filter never spends a below-freezing night in the truck bed. Cab, footwell, or sleeping bag.
  • Dry it thoroughly before storing it at the end of the season.
  • Blow through the clean end if there is any doubt — a sound membrane resists hard.
  • When in doubt, replace it. A cartridge is cheaper than a week of giardiasis, and it will not tell you it has failed.

6.6 The recommendation

Buy the LifeStraw Peak Series 8 L.

The reasoning is specific to this build rather than generic:

Cartridge life is the binding number because this dive concluded that everything gets filtered, showers included. The Peak’s 2,000 L is the longest on offer and it is also the cheapest kit, which is an unusual combination and it is not close — two to three times the litres per dollar of the Platypus or the MSR.

Eight litres is the right size. Three litres means five refills to fill a 5-gallon container; eight means two and a half. ⚠ The MSR’s ten litres is marginally better still, but not $45 better.

And the owner already runs LifeStraw filters on his bottles and bladders. Sticking to one manufacturer means one backflush routine, one set of spares, and one set of threads — which is worth more in practice than a small spec advantage.

Budget for a spare reservoir when you buy it, not when it splits. The bag is the part that will fail.

🔴 And whichever way this goes, the freeze protocol is not optional. It is the one failure mode on this page that is both certain to arise in Michigan and completely invisible when it does.
