Portable RO as the Primary System — the Options, and a Correction
Introduction
🔴 The previous volume said 2.3 to 3.3 hours of RO output made it unviable as a bulk system. That framing was wrong, and the owner was right to push on it.
It is a self-priming electric pump. The hours are machine time, not the operator’s time — exactly the same category as saying a gravity filter “takes eleven minutes.” Nobody stands over a gravity bag, and nobody stands over this either.
⭐ Run daily rather than in one session and it stops being a problem at all:

Thirty-eight minutes of a pump running while camp goes up is not a cost. This volume revisits RO as a primary system on that basis, and surveys what else exists.
8.1 What actually constrains it — and it is not the flow rate
Three real limits remain, and none of them is time.
The battery. The ITS100G-HW carries a 12,000 mAh LiFePO4 pack good for about 27 litres — roughly 7 gallons — per charge. At 5 gallons a day that is about 0.7 of a charge daily, so it needs recharging from the truck every night. ⭐ On this build that is trivial — there is a 12 V system and a USB-C feed — but it makes RO a vehicle-dependent system in a way a gravity bag is not. Away from the truck, it is finite.
The pre-filter, not the membrane. The RO element is rated 600–800 gallons; the hybrid pre-filter only 300–400. At 15–20 gallons a weekend that is roughly 15 to 27 weekends — one to two seasons — and the pre-filter is the one that runs out first because it is doing the sediment and carbon work.
⚠ Waste water. RO discards a reject stream. Crystal Quest publish a 33–50% recovery rate, meaning 1 to 2 gallons discarded for every gallon produced. ITEHIL do not publish theirs. 🔴 Ask them — [email protected] — because it determines how much has to be pumped, not how much has to be carried.
⭐ At a lakeside that reject stream costs nothing but pump time, which is the whole reason RO is more attractive on this build than it would be on a truck carrying its own water.
8.2 ⭐ “200 gallons per day” is the same speed
Worth catching before it does any persuading.

They are the same machine speed. The 200-gallon figure is simply that rate multiplied by twenty-four hours.
🔴 The real difference is the power source. The Rover runs on 12/24 V DC continuously, so it genuinely can run all day off the truck. The Itehil runs off an internal battery and stops at about 7 gallons. ⭐ That is the axis to compare portable RO on — not throughput.

8.3.1 ITEHIL ITS100G-HW
⭐ The best fit for this truck, and the reason is the intake. It has a 100 GPD self-priming pump with a 3-metre external hose and an inline pre-filter on the intake — which is precisely the float-intake-plus-pre-filter arrangement vol 4 recommended building by hand, already integrated and already sealed.
⭐ And it carries NSF/ANSI 58 certification, which is a genuine standard for RO drinking water systems rather than a marketing percentage. ⚠ Note what that standard is and is not: NSF/ANSI 58 covers RO system performance — TDS reduction and specified contaminant claims. It is not a microbiological purifier standard; that is NSF P231 or P248, which is what the LifeSaver Jerrycan carries. The two certifications answer different questions, and a system meeting 58 is not thereby validated as a backcountry purifier.
Self-contained, battery-powered, nothing else needed. The limitation is that self-containment: about 7 gallons and then it wants the truck.
8.3.2 GlacierFresh OsmoGo
The closest direct competitor, at a slightly lower price. A 3-in-1 composite cartridge ahead of the RO membrane, with explicit claims covering bacteria, viruses, parasites, heavy metals, fluoride and PFAS. Dual power — power bank or mains. ⚠ Its published rate was not available, and the certification is stated as “NSF/ANSI Certified” without naming the standard. 🔴 Ask which one before choosing it over the Itehil, because 42, 53, and 58 mean entirely different things.
8.3.3 Crystal Quest Rover
⭐ The one that could genuinely be the only water system, because it removes the battery limit. 12/24 V DC, a 150 psi diaphragm pump, sediment and carbon block ahead of the membrane, shipped as a case with a solar kit and battery included. Published 33–50% recovery, which is the only honest waste figure in this table.
⚠ It is also the biggest, heaviest and most expensive, and on a build with 221 lb of truck-only payload a cased system with its own battery and solar panel is not a small addition. ⭐ It belongs on the trailer if it belongs anywhere — which, given the trailer stays home most trips, is an argument against it.
8.4 Can RO be the only filter?
Yes, on this truck, with three conditions.
1. It has to be vehicle-based. ⭐ Recharging nightly is fine; being away from the truck for more than about seven gallons is not. A gravity filter has no such limit and weighs a pound. ⚠ That is the honest case for keeping one anyway — not as the primary system, but as the thing that works when the battery is flat or the pump fails. A water system with a single point of failure is a poor water system.
2. The shower changes the arithmetic. Drinking and cooking is about 6 gallons a weekend. Add showers and it is 18–26 — 15 to 27 weekends of pre-filter rather than 50 to 67, and two hours a day of pumping rather than forty minutes. ⭐ RO for everything is possible but wasteful, because a shower does not need PFAS-free water.
3. The reject stream has to go somewhere sensible. 🔴 Discharge it well away from the intake and well away from camp — at 33–50% recovery there is more waste than product, and returning concentrate to the spot you are drawing from is self-defeating.
8.5 The recommendation
⭐ The owner’s instinct is right and my earlier framing was too dismissive. Topping up a 5-gallon jug daily is a perfectly practical primary system, and the integrated suction pump with an inline pre-filter is a real advantage over anything assembled by hand.
Buy the ITEHIL if RO is going in. It is self-contained, it is the only one here with a named certification, the intake arrangement is right, and it is sized for a truck rather than an RV.
⚠ Keep a gravity filter as the backup and the bulk path. It is a pound and well under a hundred dollars, it has no battery, and it is the answer when the RO is charging, clogged, or broken. ⭐ Use the RO for drinking and cooking, and let gravity carry the shower — not because RO cannot do it, but because there is no reason to spend a 300-gallon pre-filter on rinsing soap off.
🔴 And nothing here changes the source rule. RO is the best chemical protection available portably, its cyanotoxin performance is still marked Verify from the previous volume, and the water you do not draw from a bloom is still the safest water on the trip.
