Choosing a Tent Against a Budget That Is Already Spent

Introduction

Corrected in part, and still open. 🔴 No tent has been bought. An earlier version of this note said one had; that was wrong, and volume 2’s Smittybilt Gen2 Overlander XL is a worked candidate rather than a purchase. The owner is deferring the decision until the rest of the truck is built and weighed — which is the correct order, because the tent is the last large variable and everything it must fit around is now measured rather than estimated.

Two things below did not survive the research and are corrected in place: the softshell and hardshell weight bands overlap almost completely rather than sitting side by side, and the awning-interference argument is an argument against fold-out tents, not against soft ones. ⭐ The decision procedure this volume lays out is therefore still live, not historical — it is what the choice will be made against, across a real range of about 90 lb to over 170.

The rooftop tent is the last large purchase on this build that is still genuinely open, and it is being made in an unusual position: almost everything else is already bought or ordered, so the tent is not choosing from a blank sheet — it is choosing from what is left.

This dive is written before the purchase deliberately, so the reasoning survives. The most common failure mode in overland builds is buying the tent first, on enthusiasm, and discovering the constraints afterwards.

1.1 What the constraints actually are

Three numbers frame the decision, and only one of them is the obvious one.

The rack is not the problem. The XTR3 carries 450 lb dynamic off-road. The awning is 64 lb including its uprights — ✅ confirmed by unpacking, 2026-08-31; an earlier version of this paragraph added a separate 20–30 lb for them and that weight does not exist — and antennas and hardware perhaps 20 lb. That leaves roughly 365 lb of rack capacity for a tent, comfortably more than any rooftop tent weighs. The rack will not be the limiting factor and should not drive the choice.

The truck is the problem. As the Bed Rack and Awning dive works through in detail, the binding constraint is the vehicle’s door-jamb payload sticker, not the rack rating. ⚠ Two figures in the original version of this paragraph were wrong and are corrected here: DECKED is 177 lb, not 204 — 204 is the full-size system, and the midsize 5 ft one fitted here is 27 lb lighter — and the 91 lb power station is out of the build entirely, replaced by a 24 lb EcoFlow River 3 Max Plus. With DECKED at 177, a rack at a measured 115 and an awning at 64, the fixed equipment alone is substantial before people, water, tools or a trailer tongue are counted. The spread between a heavy hardshell and a light softshell is one of the few remaining places to recover real capacity.

Height is the third constraint and it is already committed. The rack is 26 inches. 🔴 CORRECTED 2026-09-01 — the awning uprights do NOT add 18 inches. The “18-inch upright kit” names the top of an 8–18 in adjustment range measured from where the kit engages the rack’s side braces, not 18 inches of rise above the deck; the awning lands near tent-floor height, and the rig is about 17 inches shorter than this volume originally claimed. → Bed Rack and Awning vol 1. A tent sits on the rack deck and adds its own closed height. The finished vehicle is going to be tall regardless; a tent’s closed profile determines how tall, and that number has consequences every time the truck approaches a garage, a drive-through, or a low branch.

1.2 The genuine fork: hardshell or softshell

This is the decision; everything else is model selection.

For this build, the hardshell argument is stronger than the weight penalty suggests, and for one specific reason: the awning. A 270° awning on 18-inch uprights sweeps a large volume, and the Topoak documentation notes that the 98-inch version cannot mount to rooftop-tent side rails — which is a clear signal that awning-to-tent interference is a known problem in this class of installation. A hardshell has a rigid, predictable, published envelope. A softshell’s fold-out section and its cover are exactly the sort of soft, variable geometry that turns out to foul an awning arm at three in the morning.

The counter-argument is the payload budget, and it is not weak. Forty pounds is forty pounds on a truck that is already close to its sticker, and a softshell typically offers more sleeping area for the money.

A third option worth naming: the lightest hardshell clamshells sit at the bottom of the hardshell weight band, around 140 lb, which is inside the softshell range. If the hardshell’s rigid envelope and fast setup are wanted, buy the lightest one that will do rather than the largest — the capacity recovered is real and the sleeping area lost is modest for two people.

1.3 What to check on a specific model, and in what order

  1. The published weight, from the manufacturer. Third-party sources disagree — one widely-cited comparison lists the same popular hardshell at both 145 lb and 165 lb in the same article. A 20 lb discrepancy is a fifth of the difference between tent classes. Take the number from the manufacturer’s own specification page, and weigh it on arrival if the budget is tight.
  2. Closed height. Add it to the measured height of the loaded rack and compare against every structure the truck routinely passes under.
  3. The mounting interface, against the XTR3’s T-slot. Most tents mount on rails or channel-nuts; confirm the specific hardware and confirm the tent’s rail spacing fits the rack’s crossmember spacing. The four-quadrant adjustability of the XTR3 helps here — crossmember positions can be moved to suit the tent, which is a genuine advantage over a fixed rack.
  4. Awning clearance, explicitly. The tent’s closed envelope, its open envelope, and its ladder position all have to coexist with the awning’s arm sweep on the driver’s side. Ask the awning vendor and the tent vendor both, and expect to verify it physically.
  5. The ladder and where it lands. Rear-deploying ladders conflict with a tailgate and with anything mounted at the rear. Side-deploying ladders on the driver’s side conflict with the awning. On this truck the ladder wants to be on the passenger side or the rear, and that is a purchase constraint rather than an installation detail.
  6. Static load, for occupants. The rack’s 1,550 lb static rating covers two adults and a tent with enormous margin; this is genuinely not a concern here, and it is worth saying so because static ratings are the ones marketing emphasises.

1.4 The thing nobody weighs

Bedding, and everything left inside the tent. A hardshell’s selling point is that the mattress, sleeping bags, and pillows stay in place — which means they are permanently part of the vehicle’s load and part of its closed height. That is 20 to 40 lb that never appears in a tent’s specification and never appears in a build’s weight budget, and it is dynamic load every mile of every trip.

It is a fair trade for the convenience. It should just be counted.

1.5 The recommendation, conditional on one number

Read the door-jamb payload sticker first. Then:

  • If payload is comfortable — a hardshell, chosen at the lighter end of the range, for the rigid envelope, the fast setup, and the compatibility with an awning that is already committed.
  • If payload is tight, which is the more likely outcome for a well-equipped mid-size crew cab — a light hardshell around 140 lb still beats a heavy softshell on both weight and awning compatibility. The saving is real and it does not cost the envelope advantage.
  • If payload is genuinely constrained, the honest answer is that the trailer solves this. A tent on the trailer, or the trailer carrying the water, fuel, and camp kit that would otherwise ride in the bed, takes the pressure off the truck’s sticker entirely. That reframes the Trailer Build from a project into a load-plan component, and it is the strongest argument this project has found for building it.

1.6 What to record once it is bought

It has been bought — a Smittybilt Gen2 Overlander XL. The list below is still the right list and none of it has been done yet.

  • The actual weighed weight, not the published one.
  • The measured closed height of the finished vehicle, corrected on the tape in the cab.
  • A photograph of the awning and tent both deployed, which is the compatibility check that no specification sheet answers.
  • The first-night notes — what the setup sequence actually is, in what order, and what was awkward. This is the material that makes a build log worth reading and it is only available once.
