The Tent, Decided — and the Weight Bands That Were Wrong

Introduction

The previous volume was written before the purchase and reasoned toward a hardshell. The tent has now been chosen, and it is a softshell — the Smittybilt Gen2 Overlander XL. This volume records the research that reversed the earlier recommendation, the three separate numbers that turned out to be wrong along the way, and what the choice actually costs.

The reversal is not a change of mind about the reasoning in volume one. It is a change of mind about the facts volume one was reasoning from. Two of them do not survive contact with the current market.

2.1 The class distinction does not survive the numbers

Volume one stated the bands as softshell 100–140 lb and hardshell 140–180 lb, and built its recommendation on them: buy the lightest hardshell, because it lands inside the softshell range anyway and keeps the rigid envelope.

🔴 That is too tidy, and it is wrong. Surveyed against manufacturer specifications in 2026, softshells run 76 to 150 lb and hardshells run 110 to 275 lb. The bands do not sit side by side — they overlap almost completely.

The practical consequence is blunt. Four popular soft-shell tents weigh 139 to 150 lb, which is heavier than several hardshells and within fifteen pounds of the 165 lb hardshell this project had budgeted:

The spread inside the soft-shell class — 74 lb — is larger than the gap between the classes that the whole decision was framed around. “Softshell” is not a weight decision. It is a deployment-geometry decision, and the weight has to be looked up model by model.

This is a correction to volume one and it should be read as one. The advice there — buy the lightest hardshell — was sound given the bands it was given. The bands were the error.

2.2 Five ways a soft tent goes over a bed

The second thing volume one got wrong was treating “softshell” as one thing. There are five distinct geometries, and on a truck with a 270° awning already committed to the driver’s rail, the geometry decides everything.

Side-fold. The common case: the closed tent sits inside the rack and one half folds out past a bed rail, with the ladder under the fold-out. Best sleeping area per pound. 🔴 On this truck it must fold to the passenger side — the driver’s rail plus the awning’s arm sweep is a volume the Bed Rack dive has already declared off limits to everything.

Rear-fold. Folds aft over the tailgate, keeping both rails clear. 🔴 Rejected for this build: with the trailer coupled, the fold-out half and the ladder land on the tongue and the front trunk. Going to bed would mean uncoupling.

Forward-fold. Folds over the cab. Keeps both rails and the tailgate clear, but puts the ladder at the front fender and stacks the fold-out into the same volume the awning case already overhangs.

Half-width longitudinal. One model defines the class — the Thule Foothill, 24 in wide closed, running fore-and-aft along one half of the rack. ⭐ It leaves the other half of the rack entirely free, which on a rig fighting for antenna real estate is a genuine argument. ⚠ 83 in closed length on a 60 in bed.

Soft-lid wedge. A rigid frame with a tonneau-grade vinyl lid on gas struts, opening upward only. ⭐ This class did not appear in volume one at all, and it dissolves the trade-off that volume framed as unavoidable: a hardshell’s rigid envelope and setup speed, at 76 lb. Nothing folds outboard, so there is no awning conflict by construction. Its costs are a narrow bed, a thin mattress, and no room for bedding inside.

The finding that reverses volume one: the awning-interference argument was never an argument against soft tents. It was an argument against fold-out tents. Two of the five geometries have no lateral sweep at all, and a third folds away from the awning by design.

2.3 Net, gross, and the ladder

The third wrong number was the tent’s own weight, and it was wrong in the published sources rather than in the reasoning.

🔴 The Smittybilt XL is widely listed at 148 lb. That is the gross shipping weight. The net product weight is 139 lb. Nine pounds, on a build whose entire margin is measured in tens.

Volume one already warned that third-party sources disagree, citing a hardshell listed at both 145 and 165 lb in the same article. This is the same failure with a different mechanism, and together they give the rule:

A published tent weight is not a number until three questions are answered. Is it net or gross? Does it include the ladder — one retailer quotes this class at 52 kg “without ladder” against a manufacturer figure 16 lb higher? Does it include the mattress, the rainfly, the travel cover, and the mounting hardware?

🔴 Weigh it on arrival regardless. Two of the three numbers this volume corrects were weights taken on trust.

2.4 What was chosen, and why

Smittybilt Gen2 Overlander XL, 139 lb net. Closed 47 × 76 × 11.5 in; open 122 × 76 × 51 in; mattress a genuine king at 92.5 × 74.8 in; 770 lb load rating; 600D ripstop polyester with a polyurethane-impregnated top and a 420D oxford rainfly. Roughly $1,500.

Four reasons, in the order they actually matter:

The floor is aluminium, and there are two of them. The base is a 1-3/16 in aluminium and polyurethane sandwich, and the folding half carries the same panel — it is what the occupants stand on. 🔴 Folded, the tent is floor–fabric–floor: a rigid clamshell with the canvas sealed inside. This is the point volume one missed when it treated soft-tent durability as a fabric-exposure problem. On this tent a branch strike hits an aluminium panel. ⚠ The PVC travel cover is still the consumable — covers in this class last four to seven years against ten to fifteen for a composite shell — but a cover stretched over a rigid box tears far less readily than one over a soft bundle, and a cover is a cheap part.

The room is not marketing. A 92.5 × 74.8 in king is twice the sleeping area of the 90 lb Roofnest Meadowlark’s 80 × 43 in, for 49 more pounds. 🔴 With a CPAP, a hose and a mask sharing the tent with two adults, sleeping width stops being a comfort line and becomes the difference between a machine that is tolerated and one that is resented. The lightest tents in the class buy their weight savings at 43 to 48 in of width, and this build cannot spend that.

It folds to the passenger side, which retires the awning problem outright. Closed, the tent is 47 in wide on a rack of roughly 58 to 62 in — it sits inboard of both rails, and the entire deployment sweep goes to the passenger side. The Topoak’s arc never sees it. That was volume one’s single strongest argument for a hardshell, and this tent answers it without paying the hardshell weight.

The solar roof was already retired on its own merits. The hardshell’s unwritten justification was a surface to bolt panels to. Vehicle Power volume one concluded that under Upper Peninsula canopy solar is a bonus rather than a plan, and Weight and Balance volume one priced the roof-solar package at ~73 lb carried high against the same 28–30 lb of panel stored low and carried into a clearing and aimed. Movable panels are now the decision. Nothing about the tent choice depends on it, and it does not come back.

2.5 What it costs

Twenty-six pounds, not forty-five. The project’s structural fix was written as “softshell, −45 lb”. Against the 165 lb budgeted hardshell this is a −26 lb fix. It helps; it is not the rescue the earlier arithmetic imagined.

🔴 Polyester, and a humidifier in the bed. 600D polyester is the low-maintenance choice — it dries in an hour or two and resists mould, which matters on a tent whose rigid floor traps moisture when it folds. But polyester is the worse fabric for condensation, and a CPAP is a humidifier the occupant sleeps beside. Even with the humidifier off, which the power budget already assumes for most nights, roughly half a litre of water per person per night is going into a sealed polyester box.

The mould risk on this tent is not rain. It is the occupants. The mitigations are ordinary and they are not optional: humidifier off, both end windows cracked every night regardless of weather, an anti-condensation mat under the mattress, and time budgeted in the morning to air it before it folds. A poly-cotton tent — the Front Runner and the Meadowlark both use it — breathes better and would have been the kinder fabric here. It is also the one that punishes a wet pack, which is the trade that was taken.

Five to fifteen minutes, not thirty seconds. Poles and a rainfly, in Michigan rain, at dusk, twice a trip, for the life of the truck. This is the hardshell advantage that no specification removes, and it is the one that will be felt most often.

🔴 A king mattress takes king bedding, and nobody weighs it. Volume one named this as the thing nobody counts; the XL makes it larger. Two bags or a king duvet, two pillows and a liner is realistically 30 to 40 lb, it lives in the tent permanently, and it is dynamic load at 26 in of rack height every mile. The loadout calculator now carries it as its own line.

2.6 The payload result, honestly

Those were the figures on the day. Five further corrections have landed since — DECKED, bedding, clothing, water and the power system — and the trailer-coupled margin now stands at +82.5 lb. Weight and Balance vol 3 carries the live numbers, generated from the calculator rather than hand-typed.

Both statements are true: the tent decision is worth +26 lb, and the sheet’s margin fell by 14 lb. The margin fell because forty pounds of it was never real. The number got worse and the build got better, which is what happens when an estimate is replaced by a fact.

⭐⭐ SUPERSEDED 2026-09-16 — and in the tent’s favour. This paragraph was written when the truck had to carry a whole camp alone on a no-trailer “majority case”. The owner’s always-a-trailer policy retired that trip: truck items are now 974 lb, the coupled truck is 24.5 lb under the label, and the tent is no longer weight-constrained. 🔴 A 170 lb tent still works, so the decision should be made on room, deployment geometry and the CPAP rather than on pounds. ⭐ DECKED, corrected to 177 lb, is still the largest item after the occupants, and the owner has settled that it stays in. → Weight and Balance vol 3.

2.7 What this volume does not settle

Where the tent sits on the rack fore and aft is a separate question with a separate answer, and it turns on a one-inch clearance that was measured under the wrong conditions. It is the subject of the next volume.
