Where the Tent Sits, and Why One Inch Is Not One Inch
Introduction
The tent’s closed base is 76 in front to back. The bed is 60. Sixteen inches have to hang off one end or be split between both, and the choice is permanent the moment the mounting hardware is torqued.
The owner’s plan is to put all sixteen forward, over the cab, so nothing overhangs the rear. That plan is correct, and it is correct for three reasons that have nothing to do with tidiness. It also depends on a one-inch clearance that was measured in the one condition where it cannot fail.
3.1 The rack height was designed for this
The XTR3 was specified at 26 in for a specific reason that deserves recording, because it looks arbitrary otherwise: it is the height at which anything mounted on the rack deck clears the cab’s shark-fin antenna by about one inch. The rack was chosen so the tent could be pushed forward over the cab.
That is good design intent. The rest of this volume is about whether one inch is the right number.
3.2 Forward wins on three independent arguments
It relieves the axle that is actually constrained. Weight and Balance volume one bounds the worst-case rear axle at ~3,348 lb against a 3,434 lb GAWR — 86 lb of margin — and the trailer makes it worse, because the hitch sits behind the rear axle and multiplies tongue weight onto it at ×1.36 while removing 0.36 of it from the front. The tent plus its bedding is about 174 lb riding between the axles, so on a 126 in wheelbase:
⭐ 1.38 lb comes off the rear axle for every inch the tent moves forward.
Sixteen inches is 22 lb off the rear and onto the front — a 26 percent improvement on that 86 lb bound, and it puts the weight on the axle the tongue is unloading. Forward is the right answer on axle loading alone, before any packaging argument is made.
It is the only positioning decision that improves the aerodynamics. A tent set back leaves a low-pressure pocket between the cab roof and the tent’s leading edge, and then presents a bluff face to air the cab has already disturbed. Pushed forward over the cab, the cab becomes a fairing and the tent becomes a continuation of the roofline. Bed Rack volume three lists falling fuel economy as a permanent cost of this build; this is the one decision on the rig that pushes back on it, continuously, for nothing.
It puts the tent’s own canopy over the passenger doors. The fold goes to the passenger side, so the deployed tent shelters whatever is beneath it. Forward, that is the passenger front and rear doors; aft, it is the rear wheel. ⭐ With the awning on the driver’s side and the tent canopy on the passenger side, the finished rig has covered access on both sides — which is the useful version of an instinct that does not work the way it first appears.
3.3 What the awning cannot do, and why alignment does not help
It is tempting to position the tent to close a gap in the 270° awning’s coverage. The geometry says it cannot.

🔴 CORRECTED 2026-09-01. This table originally put the awning uprights at 44 in and the awning case at 55, from a reading of the “18 in upright kit” as 18 inches of rise. It is not — the uprights slide into the rack’s side braces with an 8–18 in adjustable range, and the awning lands near the top of the rack’s own envelope. See Bed Rack and Awning volume 1.
🔴 The original version of this paragraph was built on the 44-inch error and its conclusion does not survive. It said the tent was “entirely inboard of and below the awning’s pivot.” It is inboard, but it is not below — the awning pivots at roughly 27–28 in, and the tent occupies 26 to 37.5 in. ⭐ The tent is alongside the awning’s pivot and extends above it.
The fore-and-aft conclusion still holds — sliding the tent along the truck does not change where a 270° awning throws its shade, because the wrap is set by the awning’s own position. But the reason given was wrong, and a more important consequence was missed.
🔴🔴 The deployed arms now sweep from a point level with the tent rather than well above it. With the tent 47 in wide on a rack of roughly 58–62, there is perhaps six to eight inches of lateral clearance on the driver’s side between the tent’s edge and the awning’s mount. That is plausible and it is not provable on paper. ⭐ Tape the arm sweep before the brackets are torqued — Bed Rack and Awning volume 3, step 5.
⚠ A related expectation worth resetting: a 270° awning on the driver’s rail covers the driver’s side, the front and the rear — not the passenger side, which is where the ladder is. Position will not fix that either. The tent’s own entry canopy is what covers the ladder, which is the third argument above and another reason to go forward.
3.4 One inch is not one inch
This is the part of the plan that needs re-testing rather than trusting.
🔴 The forward sixteen inches is a cantilever. It hangs beyond the front rack uprights with nothing underneath it. The tent is rated to 770 lb and will hold two adults. Static deflection at an unsupported leading edge under a few hundred pounds can plausibly consume an inch by itself.
🔴 The rack is bolted to the bed. The shark fin is bolted to the cab. On a body-on-frame truck those are two separate structures on rubber mounts over a frame that twists, and their relative motion on washboard or a cross-axle two-track is measured in inches, not fractions of one. The one-inch figure was taken with the truck sitting level and unloaded — which is precisely the condition under which the clearance cannot be lost.
⚠ The fin is not trim. It carries GPS and telematics antennas, and crushing it is a functional loss and a body repair.
3.4.1 The fix costs two inches of height that are already free
🔴 CORRECTED 2026-09-01. The original argument here was: the awning tops out 17.5 in above the tent, so raising the tent 2 in is free. That rested on the 44-inch error, and it is wrong.
Read the corrected stack above. The awning case lands at roughly 38–39 in and the closed tent at 37.5 — effectively tied. ⭐ So 2 in of riser makes the tent the tallest thing on the truck, where the old reasoning said it would disappear under the awning.
⭐ The risers are still the right call. The argument for them is simply honest now: two inches on a rig whose highest point sits somewhere around seven feet nine is unlikely to change which structures it can enter, and it buys the shark-fin clearance the entire forward-mounting position depends on. 🔴 But it must be added to the height taped inside the cab, and “free” was the wrong word.
The XTR3 is T-slot on every face of every profile, so risers are the same 1530 extrusion and the same T-nuts already in use — no new hardware type, and fully reversible, exactly as Bed Rack volume one describes the platform. A few pounds and an afternoon. The loadout calculator carries the risers as a line so the cost is visible.
3.4.2 The test that settles it in one drive
Before anything is committed either way:
⭐ Put a tall blob of modelling clay on top of the shark fin. Drive the roughest two-track available. Measure the crush.
This is the engine builder’s piston-to-valve clearance method and it transfers exactly. It reads the true dynamic minimum clearance — frame twist, body-mount motion, suspension articulation and all — in one trip, for the price of a stick of clay. Nothing else available gives that number.
Do the static half too: 350 lb of sandbags on the forward edge of the tent, tape measure on the gap. That isolates cantilever deflection from chassis motion, and the two numbers together say whether the risers are needed or merely reassuring.
🔴 If the clay comes back flat, it was found with clay instead of with the antenna. That is the entire value of the test.
3.5 Rear flush is right, and the reason given earlier was wrong
An earlier concern in this project held that a rear overhang would eat clearance between the tailgate and a coupled trailer. ⚠ That concern does not survive the arithmetic. At a 26 in rack deck the tent’s underside sits around six feet nine inches off the ground — clear of the trailer’s front trunk, clear of the tongue, and above head height at the open tailgate. Rear overhang was never the real cost.
Rear flush is still the right answer, but for the axle and the aerodynamics, not for the trailer. And the drip line off the tent’s rear edge is handled by the rainfly, which overhangs the floor on its own — not by the mounting position.
3.6 The order of operations
- 🔴 Measure how far forward of the bed’s front edge the shark fin actually sits. Every number in this volume assumes sixteen inches of forward overhang reaches it. Confirm it before planning around it.
- 🔴 Run the clay test, loaded, on real road. Then the sandbag test for static deflection.
- ⭐ Plan on 2 in risers unless the clay says otherwise. Free height, triple the margin, reversible.
- Check the moonroof, if fitted — a sixteen-inch forward overhang shades the rear of the glass.
- ⚠ Accept that this forecloses the cab roof permanently as mounting real estate. The Antennas and Mounting dive puts everything on the rack in any case, but this should be a decision rather than a discovery.
- Tape the closed 47 × 76 in footprint onto the rack deck and live with it for a week before torquing anything. Bed Rack volume three already calls for this; it now has a second object in it.
⭐ The plan is right. The reason first given for it — keeping the rear clear — is the third-best of the three reasons for it. And the one inch is the part worth spending two inches of riser to stop thinking about.
